Adam Young has been designing unique gardens for unique settings since 1995. Over three decades, he has worked creatively across every scale and typology — from intimate inner-city courtyards and rooftop terraces to expansive family homes, heritage properties, and commercial premises — bringing the same depth of thought and personal commitment to every project, regardless of size.
Adam is known for creating gardens that exist in total harmony with the way a client lives and their relationship with the outdoors. His work resists easy categorisation: botanical and layered, formal and restrained, or sleek and contemporary — each garden is shaped entirely by the brief, the site, and the person it is made for. What unifies them is a consistently high standard of craft: inspired planting compositions, elegant built elements, and materials and artefacts sourced with genuine care and discernment. Recycled boat timber fashioned into wave-like lawn edging. A rambling family garden threaded with children's hideaways. A refined, low-maintenance entertaining zone that feels like an extension of the interior. In every case, the garden is maximised for its own individuality — a singular green space that enhances the daily lives of those who inhabit it.
Adam's design sensibility has been shaped by extensive international travel and a lifelong study of the world's great gardens. He has drawn inspiration from the landscapes of America, Europe, Japan, and Thailand — most notably the painterly, emotionally rich gardens of English designer Gertrude Jekyll, with their beauty, variety, and quiet sense of mystery. This breadth of reference informs work that feels rooted and considered rather than trend-driven. Adam has also designed temple gardens in both India and Australia, bringing a rare contemplative dimension to his practice.
His credentials are as considered as his gardens. Adam holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Horticulture from the University of Melbourne (Burnley College), and before establishing Adam Young Garden Design he deepened his understanding of design principles and thoughtful plant selection through work alongside international garden designers in Melbourne and with the National Trust (Victoria) on heritage landscape plans. He served as consultant to the Menzies Foundation on the landscape masterplan for Sages Cottage on the Mornington Peninsula — a project that reflects both the rigour and sensitivity he brings to every commission.
Adam's work can be found across Melbourne's finest residential suburbs, with notable projects in Albert Park, Williamstown, Malvern, Glen Iris, Murrumbeena, and Brighton. Every one of them designed, managed, and delivered personally — because that is the only way Adam has ever worked.
